Hats
Off To the Class of 2008!
Congratulations
to the Class of 2008, The East Harlem School's largest graduating
class yet! This class boasted an extremely bright group, with
graduates attending top high schools in and outside of the city.
Held for the third year at the New York Society for Ethical
Culture, graduates were given inspiration by keynote speaker,
Dr. Susana Morales, who heeded them to take on life's challenges
head-on. We feel confident in sending this class out into the
world and expect many great things from them in the years to
come!
EHS ALUMNI PANEL
EHS Alumni keep close
ties with the School. This June, a group of 8 EHS graduates
in
high school and college gathered to form our annual Alumni Panel.
They shared their high school and college experiences with current
EHS students and their families. The third summer of Brooks
Fellowships for Community Service has kicked off with 20 participating
alumni ranging from the classes of 2000 to 2007. These graduates
are awarded stipends for using their summer breaks to work at
non-profit and community organizations.
EHS VISITS
WASHINGTON, DC
For
the fourth consecutive year, select East Harlem School students
visited our nation's capital and met with top-ranking government
officials. Students interviewed East Harlem's
Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Senator John
Kerry, and Congressman Xavier Becerra. This
year's group was also fortunate enough to get a private tour
of the White House!
THE
2008 POETRY SLAM
This year's East
Harlem School Poetry Slam
was held on May 7th at Carolines on Broadway. Guests
enjoyed drinks, hor d'oeurves and amazing student poetry!
THE
EAST HARLEM SCHOOL BROKE GROUND!
The
children, staff, and faculty of The East Harlem School were
joined on October 20, 2006 by dedicated supporters to celebrate
the beginning of construction on our future home. Mayor Michael
Bloomberg and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer spoke
eloquently about the School and joined trustees in shoveling
away the first patches of ceremonial soil. To commemorate this
historic event, students presented a time-capsule filled with
letters addressed to future classes of EHS. The celebration
continued with a small reception at our temporary home, one
block from the original Exodus House site. There, Harlem Congressman
Charles Rangel addressed the assembly and joined in the festivities
of the day!
THE CLASS
OF 2007 GRADUATES
For
the second year in a row, The East Harlem School's graduation
ceremony was held at The New York Society for Ethical Culture.
Graduation is a special event at EHS and is attended by all
students and families. In addition to diplomas for the eighth
grade students, all student achievement awards are presented
during this ceremony. This year, we were honored to have Dr.
Martin Sternstein present the keynote address. Dr. Sternstein
is a profesor of mathematics at Ithaca College and treats our
students to an annual lecture, inspiring them with his love
of and his dynamic teaching style.
