2017 Spring Poetry Slam

The 2017 Spring Poetry Slam was an incredible success! On April 27th, 31 students from EHS captivated over 350 guests with their original prose at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in Times Square. Our poets spoke of family sacrifice and love, immigration, the sights and smells of New York, and the humble histories of their ancestors. A lively and diverse panel of special guest and celebrity judges included:

The Reverend Dr. Mark Bozzuti-Jones: Priest and Director of Core Values and Latin America & Caribbean Relations at Trinity Church Wall Street.

Perla Figuereo: EHS Alum (2013) and senior at Cristo Rey New York High School. This fall Perla will attend Bates College in Maine.

Jane Foley Fried: Head of the Brearley School, a K-12 school for girls in New York city.

Rupert Friend: Writer, producer, director, and lyricist. Since 2012, Rupert has played the role of 'Peter Quinn' on the Emmy-winning Showtime series Homeland.

Aimee Mullins: Athlete, Model, actress, and advocate for women sports, and the next generation of prosthetics. Aimee is currently starring in the Netflix hit series Stranger Things and will be inducted in the National Women's Hall of Fame in September 2017.

James Waterston: American film, television and theater actor. James just finished shooting the pilot for David Simon's new HBO series The Deuce.

Thank you to our poets, supporters, and judges for making the evening a great success!
