Global Citizens

EHS cultivates the attributes of a global citizen. Through meditation, sport, and a deep pursuit of the liberal arts, our students are able to adapt to the new, and create and share lives of deep meaning, dynamic virtue, and transcendent joy. Moving with agility across class, race, and national borders, our students bring healing to a troubled planet. Within is the first of many alumni dispatches from Spanish Harlem, bringing you some light and hope.

This year's eighth graders pioneered EHS's first-ever Delaware Water Gap–based outdoor leadership expedition, and loved it. Guided by outdoor educators from Experience Learning as well as EHS faculty/staff chaperones, students hiked about 20 miles of the Appalachian Trail and spent five nights outdoors. In three groups of 8–9 students, our oldest Warriors learned to pitch tents, build camp, cook using WhisperLite stoves, read maps, and guide one another through long and difficult days of hiking.

On Wednesday, May 31, our seventh- and eighth-grade students had the privilege of hearing from CBS News anchor Cindy Hsu about mental health, journalism, and her incredible life story. Two days after her visit to EHS, Ms. Hsu raved about the school on her show—watch her segment about EHS now!

EHS’s spring 2023 lacrosse season was a testament to the transformative power of athletics, and instilled values that extend far beyond the playing field. With exciting wins leading to a semi-final match on the boys' side, and significant growth for a girls' team that was largely new to the sport, it was a dynamic season all around.

With expert instruction from Isabelle Fernandez, assistant educator for student and teacher programs at The Frick Collection, our Art Club recently had a chance to dive deep into Rembrandt’s portraiture—and the many worlds his work spanned—through a combination of guided sketching and generative, open-ended conversation. Under the expert guidance of architect Elaine Sun of K.I.D.S. for Equity, and other architects from GLUCK+, seventh graders were treated this week and last to a workshop that introduced big ideas in small spaces, and allowed students to flex their creative muscles and bring unique community-minded concepts to life. 

The class of 2023 rang in the springtime with a fun and informative morning at the Endeavor Therapeutic Horsemanship farm in Mt. Kisco, New York, thanks to an introduction made by EHS's longtime supporters at The Andrew K. Dwyer Foundation.

EHS's oldest students were treated to an immersive production of a classic Shakespearean comedy last Friday, thanks to the magic of Emit Theatre company and drama teacher Emma Copp! The seventh- and eighth-graders all had a wonderful time getting involved in the drama and trickery of Illyria on 103rd.

On Wednesday, January 25, EHS's entire eighth-grade class was treated to one of BlackRock's wonderful financial literacy seminars designed especially for our school, thanks to EHS board member and BlackRock's Global Head of Lending and Liquidity Philip Vasan! It was another enlightening afternoon in midtown, with our students learning lots from experienced BlackRock employees.

In addition to restoring EHS's Drama program to its pre-COVID levels, new teacher Emma Copp has been hard at work kicking off Choir Club this school year. Alongside musician and educator Blake Brauer, Ms. Copp has brought the music back to EHS!

A little over a year into its life, the EHS Violin Club that Brearley student Olivia Oh spearheaded in the summer of 2021 is on the rise! Featuring more students, violins, and instructors than ever, the club has become a hallmark of Tuesday and Thursday afternoons here on 103rd as it's grown. Our student violinists, naturally, are growing with it.

The Class of 2023 was able to participate in a longtime EHS tradition—a week of backpacking in Monongahela National Forest in early autumn—after a two-year hiatus caused by COVID. Fun was had, mountains were climbed, and life lessons were learned. Read all about it!

This fall, EHS is excited to offer a new Technology Club for a group of lucky 6th and 7th Graders. This new club was designed and is taught by Luigi Cicala, a teacher at The Brearley School. Mr. Cicala has been a Studio Art teacher at Brearley for 20 years, but is also a passionate advocate for all students to study Computer Science, and now teaches part-time in Brearley's Technology Department as well.

The cool autumn breeze has ushered in a new accomplished group of Honor Roll students!

Assistant Coach and 7th Grade Humanities Teacher Julia Holzman reflects on the 2021 girls' soccer season. Here, Ms. Holzman interviews student-athletes, like Michelle, who reflected, “The soccer season was a very good season, because as a team, we bonded.” Cheers of agreement from her teammates echoed across 103rd Street as the team headed eastward.
